How many jockeys and trainers are there in New Zealand?
rollover here to view answer There are 220 jockeys consisting of amateurs, apprentices and jumps jockeys. There are around 1300 trainers which are made up of fully licensed, permit to train, and owner/trainers.

What happens when a jockey weighs out and weighs in?
rollover here to view answer A jockey is officially weighed out with their saddle before the race and weighed in after the race by the clerk of the scales to make sure they are carrying the correct weight. Once all riders have weighed in, all winning bets are able to be collected.
What happens if a jockey's natural weight is less than the weight allocated to his/her mount?
rollover here to view answer The difference is made up with thin lead weights which slip under the horse's saddle.
What is an apprentice jockey?
rollover here to view answer An apprentice jockey is a rider who is attached to a trainer's stable for an apprenticeship period which lasts for four years or until 20 years old. As an apprentice rider they can claim (hence the term 'claimer') an allowance to make them more competitive against the more established jockeys while they are learning their craft. Apprentice allowances work as follows: 4kg - 0 to 5 wins
3kg - 6 to 30 wins
2kg - 31 to 60 wins
1kg - 61 to 100 wins
How much does a jockey earn?
rollover here to view answer This obviously depends on how many rides a jockey has each year and whether they have a retainer with a particular trainer and/or owner. As well as a percentage of any prize money won, Flat jockeys earn $106 per ride and Jump jockeys earn $140 per rides.

What are a trainer's main responsibilities?
rollover here to view answer Like the coach of human athlete, the trainer looks after all the aspects of getting a horse ready to compete on race day. Planning the campaign of a horse is the other major function of a trainer.
Where are trainers based?
rollover here to view answer Throughout New Zealand although there is a particularly strong concentration in the Waikato around Cambridge. Some of our most successful trainers have associated stables in Australia, and campaign horse both in New Zealand and Australia. Other successful trainers are based in the likes of Macau, and Hong Kong.
How much does it cost to have a horse in training?
