Racing and trials are set to continue at Paeroa under the direct management of the Waikato Racing Club.

Waikato Racing Club President, Dave Smith, confirmed today, 23 August 2012, that a Northern Region trials meeting has been scheduled to be held at Paeroa on Tuesday, 28 August 2012. This followed settlement of an initial one year agreement between the Waikato Racing Club and the owners of the Paeroa racecourse, The Barbara Anderson Family Trust, for the Club to conduct racing and trials at the venue for the 2012-13 season.

The Paeroa Racing Club Committee announced in July that it would cease racing at the venue at the end of the 2011-12 season.

On concluding the agreement Dave Smith stated: “The Waikato Racing Club Board believed that the immediate loss of Paeroa would have resulted in additional costs for industry participants and put further pressure on tracks in the region. The Waikato Racing Club has been able to enter into an agreement with The Barbara Anderson Family Trust to lease the Paeroa racecourse for 12 months, with a further 12 month right of renewal.  He acknowledged the support and co-operation of the owners of the Paeroa racecourse, the Paeroa Racing Club  and New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing in achieving this outcome.”

“The Waikato Racing Club has engaged the current management on new employment contracts, so for the moment it will be business as usual at Paeroa, albeit as Waikato Racing at Paeroa.”

NZTR Chairman Matthew Goodson said the availability of Paeroa for racing and trials was a very positive development and he congratulated the Waikato Racing Club on their  initiative, which will allow the Club to maximise racing opportunities at both venues in the coming season .”

All of the remaining Northern Regional licences that were previously conducted by the Paeroa Racing Club will now be allocated by NZTR to the Waikato Racing Club for the 2012-13 season.

The Northern Region licence on Monday, 3 September 2012, that had already been re-scheduled, will still be conducted by the Te Aroha Racing Club.

Waikato Racing Club General Manager, Tony Enting, confirmed the first trials meeting will be held next Tuesday, 28 August 2012.
