Wallaceville Estate Wellington Cup Day, Saturday January 20
Cup Day is one of the standout days on the New Zealand racing calendar and a major event for Wellington each summer. For the first time, the Wellington Cup, Telegraph and Thorndon Mile, which have long headlined the January meeting, will be run on the same day, ensuring that Cup Day has a race programme to match its public profile. The $250,000 Wallaceville Estate Wellington Cup, which has been run annually since 1874, is staged over 3200m and tests the stamina and heart of the leading stayers, while the $250,000 Group 1 J&N Berkett Telegraph (1200m) is New Zealand’s richest open sprint.
The $200,000 Group 1 Harcourts Thorndon Mile (1600m) attracts New Zealand’s premier milers while the leading fillies will tackle the Group 3 Desert Gold Stakes (1600m). But racing is only part of the attraction of Cup Day, with fashion, fun and friends ensuring that it is a day that appeals to those with little or no knowledge of racing, as well as the true aficionados.
