Career drawing to a close

Sofia Rosa will have her penultimate start in the Gr.1 Rydges Captain Cook Stakes (1600m) at Trentham on December 9.

“She’s having a freshen-up and then she’ll go to Wellington and her swansong race will be the Zabeel Classic,” trainer Stephen Marsh said.

Raced by Lib Petagna, Sofia Rosa has won five races with her career highlight her 2016 victory in the Gr.1 ATC Oaks (2400m) at Randwick.

Patient approach with quality mare

Allan Sharrock is in no rush with Ladies First, who has a long-term Group One goal.

“She’s at Jaimee-Lee Lupton’s place and she’s due for a gallop soon,” the New Plymouth trainer said.

“The owners would like to have a dig at the Auckland Cup with her and that’s not until March so there’s plenty of time.”

Ladies First has won six of her 10 starts, including Listed successes in the Wanganui Cup (2040m) and the Rangitikei Gold Cup (1550m).

“She’s a good mare and time was always going to be her friend,” Sharrock said.

Illness lays Kiwi-bred low

Talented New Zealand-bred three-year-old Kaonic will miss the Melbourne spring carnival.

He has been scratched from Saturday’s Gr.3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) after an elevated temperature prevented him travelling from Sydney.

The son of Savabeel has won two of his three starts for Chris Waller and will now be given a break.
